Blessed Carlo Acutis' story 14th October

Webmaster • October 9, 2021

Born in London and raised in Milan, Carlo’s wealthy parents were not particularly religious. Upon receiving his first communion at age seven, Carlo became a frequent communicant, making a point of praying before the tabernacle before or after every Mass. In addition to Francis of Assisi, Carlo took several of the younger saints as his models, including Bernadette Soubirous, Jacinta and Francisco Marto, and Dominic Savio.

At school Carlo tried to comfort friends whose parents were undergoing divorce, as well as stepping in to defend disabled students from bullies. After school hours he volunteered his time with the city's homeless and destitute. Considered a computer geek by some, Carlo spent four years creating a website dedicated to cataloguing every reported Eucharistic miracle around the world. He also enjoyed films, comics, soccer, and playing popular video games.

Diagnosed with leukemia, Carlo offered his sufferings to God for the intentions of the sitting pope--Benedict XVI--and the entire Church. His longtime desire to visit as many sites of Eucharistic miracles as possible was cut short by his illness. Carlo died in 2006 and was beatified in 2020. As he had wished, Carlo was buried in Assisi at St. Mary Major’s “Chapel of the Stripping,” where Francis had returned his clothes to his father and began a more radical following of the Gospel.

Among the thousands present for Carlo’s beatification at Assisi’s Basilica of St. Francis were many of his childhood friends. Presiding at the beatification service, Cardinal Agostino Vallini praised Carlo as an example of how young people can use technology to spread the Gospel “to reach as many people as possible and help them know the beauty of friendship with the Lord.” His liturgical feast is celebrated on October 12.

Reflection

Carlo Acutis did not strive to become famous but rather to cooperate as generously as possible with God’s grace. That journey brought him many experiences, but they were all united by a burning desire to serve God.

O God our Father,

we thank you for giving us Carlo,

a model of life for young people,

and a message of love for all.

You made him fall in love with your son Jesus,

making the Eucharist his “highway to heaven.”

You gave him Mary as a beloved mother,

and you made him, through the Rosary,

a cantor of her tenderness.

Receive his prayer for us.

Look above all upon the poor, whom he loved and assisted.

Grant me too, through his intercession, the grace

that I need (mention your intention).

And make our joy full, raising Carlo among

the saints of your Church,

so that his smile shines again for us

to the glory of your name. Amen.

If you wish to sign up for Gift Aid. It is a great way to help the parish financially, costing you absolutely nothing. If you wish to sign up contact myself or Doreen Lee and we will give you the form and hand it back as you can and we can get it organised. As I said it costs you nothing, but helps the parish so much.

I will be blessing the icon and the new statue of Carlo Acutis this Sunday at the 11am Mass Prayer to Saint Carlo Acutis O God, our Father Thank you for giving us Carlo, model of life for young people, and a message of love for all. Through his intercession, may I receive the grace I need ..... And fulfil our joy, by placing Carlo among the Saints of your Holy Church, that his smile may shine again for us for the glory of your name Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be. Prayer for Saint Pier Giorgio Frassati Heavenly Father, Give me the courage to strive for the highest goals, to flee every temptation to be mediocre. Enable me to aspire to greatness, as Pier Giorgio did, and to open my heart with joy to Your call to holiness. Free me from the fear of failure. I want to be, Lord, firmly and forever united to You. At the 11am Mass we have lost three Eucharistic Ministers for the foreseeable future. Marie because of illness please keep her in our prayers. Michelle & Graham because they have moved to Ayrshire. All of them hopefully will resume their duties in the future. I asked some people to become new Eucharistic Ministers last weekend and I will continue this weekend. I will be having a meeting with those I have asked this Wednesday 10th at 7pm in the Side Chapel. It means for the moment that the remaining Eucharistic Ministers at the 11am will be on more often. I thank you for your cooperation in advance. I really appreciate it.

I am looking for Volunteers to move the power-points on during the Sunday Masses, Vigil 4pm, 9.30am & 11am. It is very easy to operate, if we get enough volunteers for each Mass we would put a wee rota together. It would take a wee bit of pressure off me.
